You have probably heard of the old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Nowhere is this more evident as when learning a new exercise for the first time. Before trying any new movement, it can be helpful to first look at photos and videos of the exercise. Seeing an analysis or breakdown of the movement can be helpful prior to attempting it at the gym.
The purpose of this and future articles like this, is to help you do just that. We will look at some of the more challenging exercises found in the Jefit database. Our goal is to simply breakdown each exercise to see, in a step-by-step format, how they are performed. We will use multiple photos taken from various angles. The first exercise we will look at is the deadlift. This is one of the best compound exercises you can do.
Barbell Deadlift
Exercise Technique
1.) Start by standing in front of a barbell with your feet about shoulder-width apart.
2.) Pick up the barbell, with an overhand grip, while keeping your arms extended straight down. You also have the option of using a combination grip with one hand under and one hand over the bar, if you prefer.
3.) Stand up straight with the barbell in your hands, and refrain from moving your arms. As you execute the movement, think about driving both feet into the floor and activate the glutes while extending the knees and hips, returning to the starting position.
Final Thoughts
In addition to the deadlift being a great compound exercise, the movement is also ideal for increasing strength and adding muscle mass around the glutes, legs, and back. The exercise can also be performed using dumbbells or kettlebells.
